Five Reasons to Become a Maryland Community Fellow

If you answered "YES" to any of  these questions, then you should apply to become a Maryland Community Fellow!

 

The Maryland Community Fellows Program places undergraduate juniors/seniors and graduate students at community action agencies to help increase their capacity to provide financial education and free tax preparation throught the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to qualifying working families throughout Maryland.

 

Our Fellows have come from University of Maryland - Baltimore County, College Park and Eastern Shore, McDaniel College and Salisbury University.

The Maryland CASH (Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope) Campaign™: is a state-wide network of organizations that promote financial stability for working families. Our coalition includes Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) partners that provide free tax preparation services, promote access to high-quality financial services, and offer financial education and coaching.

 

Maryland CASH coordinates a network of practitioners, while focusing on three main initiatives: capacity building and training, financial education, and research and advocacy.

 

1. Capacity Building and Training: The Maryland CASH Campaign provides training opportunities for our partners and practitioners throughout the state.

2. Financial Education: Free and low-cost financial education classes are available through the Maryland CASH Academy. These classes are offered throughout the state to all Maryland residents. Register online at www.MDCASHacademy.org.

 

In July 2011, we launched our small group initiative. 18 individuals were selected to meet on weekly basis for two months to discuss their financial goals. Group members have have achieved goals such as eliminating credit card balances, establishing emergency savings, and consistently spending within their incomes. 3. Research and Advocacy: The Maryland CASH Campaign advocates for policies at the state and national level that support financial stability for working families. *NEW* Check out the summary of Maryland CASH's 2012 policy victories

 

*NEW* Led by CFED (the Corporation for Enterprise Development), the Assets & Opportunity Scorecard is a comprehensive look at wealth, poverty and the financial security of families in the United States. It assesses the 50 states and the District of Columbia on how well residents are faring and what states can do to help residents build and protect assets. The Scorecard provides state-by-state performance and policy measures across five Issue Areas: Financial Assets & Income, Businesses & Jobs, Housing & Homeownership, Health Care and Education. *NEW* The Annie E.
